Synopsis

The work deals with the stratigraphic sequence of two prehistoric caves in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, Cueva de Ardales and Sima de las Palomas de Teba, which have human occupations from the Palaeolithic and Neolithic periods.
It is a collective, interdisciplinary work with the participation of an international team. It includes stratigraphic studies, soil micromorphology, pollen, anthracology, terrestrial macrofauna, terrestrial microfauna, marine fauna, archaeometric studies of raw materials, analysis of the technology and functionality of lithic products, ceramic studies, as well as prehistoric art. It is completed by interesting contributions of numerous dating techniques: Uranium-Thorium, C14, TL, OSL.
Interesting data is presented on the succession of occupations of Neanderthal and anatomically modern human populations, with new chronological data, which would support the artistic production by Neanderthal populations, given the chronologies of more than 60,000 years.
The work also contains a wealth of statistical and quantitative data from the different contributions and analytical and archaeometric studies, which are fundamental for the historical and archaeological assessment obtained in the Project.
It has three initial documents: Table of Contents, Introduction and Equipment. Part I. Cueva de Ardales, has 32 chapters. Part II. Sima de las Palomas de Teba, has 17 chapters. There are summaries of the prehistoric occupation of the two caves, Bibliography, List of figures, authors and Acknowledgements. The Appendices present the tables of both caves with the data of the specific documentary record of the different specialities.

The results obtained contribute significantly to the understanding of the Pleistocene and Holocene human occupations in the south of the Iberian Peninsula. Particularly interesting is the documentation of the Middle Palaeolithic, linked to Neanderthal populations.
More than 100 absolute dates of biological products from the archaeological sequence of Palaeolithic and Neolithic societies in Andalusia are presented.
The palaeoenvironmental and vegetation data show processes of aridity and humidity. This new panorama helps to clarify the gaps in the occupation of the sequence, especially in the transition from the Middle Palaeolithic to the Upper Palaeolithic.
The application of the Uranium-Thorium technique to the crusts of Cueva de Ardales located on graphic manifestations has made it possible to obtain dates of more than 60,000 years, which allows us to attribute these graphic expressions (dots, spots, lines) to Neanderthal societies. This contributes to the breaking of an important paradigm in the history of art. All the locations of the samples and all the absolute dates obtained from the indicated crusts are presented in detail in this work.
Both caves have also provided an interesting Upper Palaeolithic sequence, which complements the information on the artistic manifestations known from previous studies in Cueva de Ardales.
There are numerous interdisciplinary contributions (prehistoric archaeology, geology, archaeometry, fauna studies, pollen studies, anthracology, absolute dating, DNA, prehistoric art, etc.) that allow for an outstanding advance in the knowledge of prehistoric archaeology.
Appendices are provided for both caves with data documenting the novelties of these studies.
